The History of the Raiders
Starting Out Strong
The Raiders began in 1971. They were a very successful team in the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League (SJHL). This league is a step below major junior hockey. From 1977 to 1982, Prince Albert won the national championship for Tier II hockey, called the Manitoba Centennial Trophy, four times. They also won the Anavet Cup seven times in a row during these years. This showed they were a top team!
Terry Simpson coached the team during these successful years. He stayed with them when they moved to the WHL. The city of Prince Albert got a new team in the WHL for the 1982–83 season.
Winning the Memorial Cup in 1985
Just three years later, the Raiders became the best team in the WHL. They had an amazing season with 58 wins, only 11 losses, and 3 ties. This was the best record in the WHL!
The Raiders then won the WHL championship. They beat teams like the Calgary Wranglers and Kamloops Blazers. Key players from this team included captain Dan Hodgson, Tony Grenier, Dave Pasin, and Dave Manson.
After winning the WHL, the Raiders went to the 1985 Memorial Cup. This tournament decides the best junior hockey team in Canada. They played against the Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds, Verdun Junior Canadiens, and Shawinigan Cataractes. The Raiders won the Memorial Cup by beating the Shawinigan Cataractes 6–1 in the final game. They became the champions of all CHL teams!
Another Championship in 2019
The Raiders had another fantastic season in 2018–19. They finished with 54 wins and only 10 losses. This made them the top team in the Eastern Conference and the entire WHL.
They swept the Red Deer Rebels in the first round of the playoffs. Then they beat the Saskatoon Blades and the Edmonton Oil Kings. In the final, they faced the Vancouver Giants. It was a very close series, going to a seventh game. Dante Hannoun scored the winning goal in overtime! This gave the Raiders their second WHL Championship. They went on to the 2019 Memorial Cup but did not advance past the first round.
