Starting in the NHL (2014–2016)

The Edmonton Oilers drafted Leon third overall in the 2014 NHL entry draft. This made him the highest-drafted German-trained player in NHL history.

On August 12, 2014, Leon signed his first contract with the Oilers. He made his NHL debut on October 9, 2014. His first NHL goal came on October 24 against the Carolina Hurricanes.

Leon played 37 games for the Oilers in his first season. He scored two goals and had seven assists. He was then sent back to the Prince Albert Raiders to continue his development.

In the last Oilers game at Rexall Place on April 6, 2016, Leon scored the final NHL goal in that arena. The Oilers won 6–2 against the Vancouver Canucks.

Becoming an NHL Star (2016–Present)

The 2016-17 NHL season was a big year for Leon and the Oilers. On March 23, 2017, he became the first Oiler since 1990 to have six straight games with multiple points.

Leon finished the season with 29 goals and 48 assists for 77 points. The Oilers, led by Leon and captain Connor McDavid, made the 2017 Stanley Cup playoffs after a 10-year drought.

In the playoffs, Leon scored his first NHL playoff goal against the San Jose Sharks. The Oilers won that series. In the next round against the Anaheim Ducks, Leon scored a hat-trick in Game 6. He also had five points in that game, helping the Oilers avoid elimination. The Oilers were eventually eliminated in Game 7. Leon finished his first playoffs with 16 points in 13 games.

On August 16, 2017, Leon signed a big eight-year contract with the Oilers. This contract was worth $68 million. Many people now see this as one of the best contracts in the league because Leon became an even bigger star.

The 2017-18 NHL season was tough for the Oilers and Leon. He dealt with an injury and his scoring dropped a bit. The team missed the playoffs that year.

The 2018–19 NHL season also had its challenges for the team. However, Leon had his best season yet in terms of points. On April 6, 2019, he became the sixth Oiler to score at least 50 goals in a season. He also became the ninth Oiler to reach 100 points in a season. He finished with 50 goals and 55 assists for 105 points. His 50 goals were second only to Alexander Ovechkin's 51 goals.

For the 2020–21 NHL season, the NHL changed its divisions due to travel rules. Leon and the Oilers had a strong season. On January 31, 2021, Leon had six assists in a game against the Ottawa Senators. This was the first time an Oilers player had done that since 1986. Leon finished second in league scoring with 84 points in 56 games. The Oilers were swept by the Winnipeg Jets in the first round of the 2021 Stanley Cup playoffs.

He finished the regular season with a career-high 55 goals and 110 points.

In the 2022 Stanley Cup playoffs, the Oilers faced the Los Angeles Kings. Leon got a high ankle sprain in Game 6 but kept playing. He helped the Oilers win that series. In the second round, the Oilers played the Calgary Flames in the "Battle of Alberta." Leon set a playoff record with five straight games having three or more points. He also became the fourth fastest player in NHL history to reach 50 playoff points. The Oilers reached the Western Conference Final for the first time since 2006. They were defeated by the Colorado Avalanche. Leon played through a lot of pain from his injury during this series.

On April 5, 2024, Leon recorded his 500th NHL assist. He finished the 2023–24 NHL season with 41 goals and 65 assists for 106 points.
