David Michael Manson (born January 27, 1967) is a Canadian former professional ice hockey player. He was a tough defenceman who played for many teams in the National Hockey League (NHL). After his playing career, he became a coach, including a role as an assistant coach for the Edmonton Oilers.
Playing Career
David Manson started his hockey journey playing junior hockey for his hometown team, the Prince Albert Raiders. This team is part of the Western Hockey League, a major league for young players.
In 1985, when he was 18, David was picked 11th overall in the 1985 NHL Entry Draft by the Chicago Blackhawks. This was a big achievement, showing he was one of the top young players in North America. He joined the Blackhawks a year later.
During his long career, David played for several NHL teams. Besides the Blackhawks, he also played for the Edmonton Oilers, Winnipeg Jets (who later became the Phoenix Coyotes), Montreal Canadiens, Dallas Stars, and Toronto Maple Leafs. He was known for his strong defensive play and his willingness to stand up for his teammates.
David Manson retired from playing hockey in 2002. He played in 1,103 NHL games, scoring 390 points and racking up 2,792 penalty minutes. This shows he was a consistent player who wasn't afraid to get involved in the physical side of the game.
Coaching Career
After hanging up his skates, David Manson moved into coaching. He started as an assistant coach for his old junior team, the Prince Albert Raiders, from 2002 to 2009. He briefly coached another local team, the Prince Albert Mintos, before returning to the Raiders in 2011. He stayed with them until 2018.
In 2018, David took a step up and became an assistant coach for the Bakersfield Condors. This team plays in the American Hockey League, which is a league just below the NHL.
Then, in February 2022, he got a big opportunity: he was hired as an assistant coach for the Edmonton Oilers in the NHL. He worked with the Oilers until November 2023.
Personal Life
David Manson has four children with his late wife, Lana. He lives in Christopher Lake, Saskatchewan.
His son, Josh, is also a professional hockey player and is a defenceman for the Colorado Avalanche in the NHL. His daughter, Meagan, played soccer for the women's team at the University of Saskatchewan. David also has twins, a son named Ben and a daughter named Emma. Ben played junior hockey for the La Ronge Ice Wolves.
David Manson is known for his deep, raspy voice. This happened after he took a hard hit to his throat during a game in 1991, which caused lasting damage to his voice box.
