Esther Ayuso, born in November 1958, is a very important person in Belize. She was the first woman from Belize to become an architect! An architect is someone who designs buildings. Esther Ayuso is famous for designing better hospitals in Belize. These include Belize Medical Associates, the Cleopatra White Polyclinic, Matron Robert Polyclinic, and the Hoy Eye Clinic. She also designed the special care units for babies and children at Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital, which were finished in 2015.
Esther Ayuso has also worked in government. She was a Senator, which is like a lawmaker. She also led the National Women's Commission and represented Belize in a group called the Inter-American Commission of Women. In 2015, she received a special award called the Order of the British Empire for all her hard work and help in the community.

Early Life and Education
Esther Josefina Ayuso was born in Caracas, Venezuela. Her mother, Josefina, worked at a bank, and her father, Oscar, was a Belizean banking official. Soon after Esther was born, her family moved back to Belize City in what was then called British Honduras.
Becoming an Architect
Esther went to St. Catherine’s Academy High School and finished in 1975. That same year, she went to Caracas to study architecture. It was a bit tricky to get into college there because the rules were different. Esther worked very hard, taking extra high school classes for two years. She then got into the architecture program at Universidad Central de Venezuela.
In 1983, she earned her degree in architectural technology. When she returned to Belize, she couldn't find work right away, so she went back to Venezuela. There, she met and married another architect. They had two sons in 1990 and 1991.
Returning to Belize
The family stayed in Caracas until 1992. After some political events in Venezuela, they moved back to Belize. Esther first worked at Professional Engineering Services as an architectural assistant. In 1995, she and her husband started their own company called Arcade Ltd.
Besides designing homes, Esther Ayuso is well-known for her public projects. She helped expand Belize Medical Associates from a small clinic into a hospital. She also redesigned the Cleopatra White and Matron Robert polyclinics and worked on the Hoy Eye Clinic. In 1996, they welcomed their third son.
In 2000, their company, Arcade Ltd., was badly damaged by Hurricane Keith. After this, Esther and her husband focused on giving advice for building and construction projects.
Public Service and Advocacy
Esther Ayuso has dedicated much of her life to public service and helping women.
Role as Senator
In 2006, the Prime Minister of Belize, Dean Barrow, chose Esther Ayuso to be a Senator. She served in this important role for two years.
Leading Women's Rights
In 2008, after being a Senator, Esther Ayuso became the leader of the National Women's Commission (NWC). This group works to improve the lives of women in Belize. In the same year, she also became Belize's representative to the Inter-American Commission of Women. She still holds this position today.
Under her leadership, the NWC did many important things. They studied how to update the National Gender Policy, which helps ensure fairness for everyone. They also held meetings to create a Gender Studies program in Belize. Additionally, they ran a "Women in Politics Project" to teach women about politics and how to run for elected office.
Improving Building Safety
Esther Ayuso was also one of the people who started the Belize City Local Building Authority in 2009. This group was created to make sure building rules were followed. They also helped the city council create rules for zoning and safety.
In 2011, work began on a Pediatric intensive care unit at Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital. Esther Ayuso designed this important unit. The construction was completed, and the special care units for children and babies were fully ready by December 2015.
Royal Recognition
In 2015, Esther Ayuso was given the Officer of The Order of the British Empire (OBE) award. This honor recognized her significant contributions to the community in Belize and her strong dedication to women's rights.
