Esther Ferrer is a famous artist from San Sebastián, Spain. She was born in 1937. Esther Ferrer is especially known for her unique performance art. She also received the Marie-Claire Prize for Contemporary Art in France. Another big award she won is the Velázquez Plastic Arts Prize.

Esther Ferrer's Artistic Journey

Early Art Group: Zaj

In 1966, Esther Ferrer joined an art group called Zaj. She worked with Walter Marchetti and Juan Hidalgo Codorniu. Zaj was a Spanish performance art group. They were known for their bold and new ideas in art. Their "concerts" were often quite different. They even performed in Spain during a time of strict rules, despite censorship. The Zaj group performed for thirty years. They traveled to many countries. The group stopped performing in 1996. This was after a big show at the Reina Sofia Museum in Madrid.

Her Work as a Performer

As a performance artist, Esther Ferrer has traveled all over the world. She has taken part in art festivals in many countries. These include Canada, Korea, the United States, and Japan. Esther Ferrer was married to the composer Tom Johnson. He was known for his minimalist music. Tom Johnson passed away in late 2024.
