About Ethan Allen
Ethan Allen was born on June 18, 1849. His father was a horse named Black Hawk. His mother was a gray mare whose father was Red Robin. Red Robin was a son of a famous horse named Figure. Ethan Allen was born in Ticonderoga, New York. His breeder was Joel W. Holcomb.
Appearance and Size
Ethan Allen was a bay horse, which means he had a reddish-brown body and a black mane and tail. He had three white socks on his legs and a white star on his forehead. He stood about 15 hands tall, which is about 5 feet (152 cm) at the shoulder. When he was fully grown, he weighed around 1,000 pounds (450 kg).
Racing and Legacy
Ethan Allen was known as the best trotter of his time. A trotter is a horse that moves its legs in a special way, where diagonal pairs of legs move forward at the same time. He could trot a mile in just 2 minutes and 25 seconds!
He had several owners during his life. For a few years, in 1866 and 1868, he was available for breeding in Boston. People paid $100 to have their mares bred with him. He had about 72 foals (baby horses) in his lifetime. Only two of these foals were fillies (female horses).
Ethan Allen was so famous that he appeared in several pictures made by a company called Currier and Ives. He was also the model for a popular horse weathervane.
Later Life and Burial
Ethan Allen passed away in Lawrence, Kansas, on September 10, 1876. He was 28 years old. He was buried there, and a marker was placed over his grave. Later, his skeleton was carefully dug up. It was then put together and displayed in a museum in Lawrence, Kansas.
