Ethel Barringer (born July 24, 1883 – died May 30, 1925) was a talented artist from South Australia. She was good at many types of art, but she was especially famous for her etchings.
About Ethel Barringer
Ethel Barringer was born in Adelaide, Australia. Her parents were Leonard and Fanny Barringer.
She went to the Advanced School for Girls. Later, she studied art at the SA School of Arts and Crafts. There, she learned from famous artists like Hans Heysen and Mary Packer Harris.
Ethel also spent several years studying art in London. She took classes in many different areas. These included enamelling, jewellery design, and etching. She studied at the St John's Wood Art School and the Sir John Cass Technical School.
When she came back to Adelaide, Ethel opened her own art studio. It was located on Flinders Street. Later, she became an assistant teacher. She taught at the School of Arts and Crafts on North Terrace.
Ethel was teaching in Blackwood for four years. She was very popular with both her students and other teachers. She died suddenly in 1925. Just before her death, she had been praised for her work. Her art was shown at an exhibition in Sydney.

Ethel had a brother named Herbert Page Barringer. He was also an artist. Herbert married Gwendoline L'Avance Adamson. She was also a well-known artist, known as Gwen Barringer.
How She is Remembered
Ethel Barringer is remembered for her artistic talent. A special award was created in her honor. It is called the Ethel Barringer Memorial Prize for etching.
A street in Canberra, Australia, is also named after her. It is called Barringer Street in the suburb of Conder. This street also honors her sister-in-law, Gwen Barringer.
