Gwen Barringer studied art at the South Australian School of Arts and Crafts. She learned from famous teachers like H. P. Gill, Archibald Collins, and Hans Heysen. She was also a very important member of the South Australian Society of Arts for more than 30 years. Besides painting, she was a well-known art teacher, helping many students learn to create their own masterpieces.

Gwen Barringer passed away in Adelaide on 26 August 1960 after being ill for a long time. Her artworks are now kept in important art galleries. You can find her paintings in the State galleries of South Australia and Victoria, and also in the National Gallery in Canberra.

Gwen Barringer's Family Connections

Gwen Barringer was born Gwendoline L'Avence Adamson. Her parents were Adam and Kate Emma Adamson. She was born in a suburb of Adelaide called Harrowville, which is now part of St Peters. Her grandfather was the brother of James Hazel Adamson, who was also a well-known artist in early South Australia.

On 18 November 1910, Gwen married Herbert Page Barringer at Christ Church, North Adelaide. Herbert was also a watercolour artist. Gwen's sister-in-law, Ethel Barringer, was another talented artist in the family.

Honoring Gwen Barringer's Legacy

Gwen Barringer's artistic contributions are remembered in Australia. A street in the Canberra suburb of Conder is named Barringer Street in her honor. It also honors her sister-in-law, Ethel.
