Exploring St Peters: A Brief History

St Peters has a rich history, dating back to the early days of South Australia. It was first settled in 1838. At that time, pieces of land were sold to people who invested in the South Australia Company.

How St Peters Got Its Name

Originally, St Peters was its own separate town. It was named after a school belonging to the Church of England. This school was called St Peter.

The well-known school, St Peter's College, moved to its current spot in 1854. It was built on a large piece of land, about 75 acres, in what is now called Hackney.

Local Government and Landmarks

The St Peters Post Office opened its doors on 1 November 1886. For many years, St Peters was a separate local government area. It was known as the Corporate Town of St Peters.

However, since 1997, it has been part of the larger City of Norwood Payneham & St Peters. The old St Peters Town Hall is an important building. It has a banquet hall built in 1911. Both are listed on the South Australian Heritage Register, meaning they are protected for their historical value.

The Spicer Memorial Church

The East Adelaide Primitive Methodist Church was started in 1883. It later became the East Adelaide Methodist church in 1901. In 1906, it was renamed Spicer Memorial Church. This was to honor Sir Edward Spicer, a generous supporter who had passed away.

Today, this church is known as Spicer Uniting Church at St Peters. Across the road from the church are cottages. These cottages were funded by the Spicer Cottages Trust. They provide affordable housing for retired Methodist ministers.
