Hackney is a suburb located just east of the Adelaide city centre in South Australia. It is part of the City of Norwood Payneham St Peters. Hackney is right next to the beautiful Adelaide Park Lands, the main city area, and North Adelaide.

The O-Bahn Busway runs along Hackney Road, which forms the western edge of the suburb. The River Torrens is to the north. North Terrace, which continues through Kent Town, is to the south. Small streets and lanes make up its eastern border.

Hackney is mostly known for St Peter's College. This is a large independent school for boys. It covers about 60% of the suburb's total area. The school has been in this spot since 1854. Three of its buildings are officially listed as heritage-listed. This means they are important historical sites.

Another important historical building is Romilly House. It is located in the southwest part of Hackney, on North Terrace. Romilly House is also listed on the South Australian Heritage Register.

Hackney is very close to some of Adelaide's popular spots. It is next to Park 11 of the Adelaide Park Lands. Across Hackney Road, you can find the Botanic Gardens. There is also the Botanic Park and the National Wine Centre.

Understanding the O-Bahn Busway Project

Before the 2018 state election, the government decided to build a new tunnel. This tunnel was for the O-Bahn Busway. It cost about $160 million. The tunnel goes from Hackney, through the Adelaide Park Lands. It ends near Grenfell Street and East Terrace in the city centre.

As part of this project, Hackney Road was rebuilt. The middle section of the road was changed. This created special bus lanes and an entrance/exit for the new tunnel. This construction caused some traffic delays. The project aimed to make bus travel faster into the city.
