Etienne Schneider (born 29 January 1971) is a politician and economist from Luxembourg. He served as the First Deputy Prime Minister of Luxembourg from 2013 to 2020. He is a member of the Luxembourg Socialist Workers' Party (LSAP).
Schneider was a local council member in Kayl from 1995 to 2005. He also worked as a secretary for the LSAP group in Parliament from 1997 to 2004. In 2005, he became the first alderman (a senior local official) of Kayl, a role he held until May 2010.
He was appointed Minister for the Economy and Foreign Trade in February 2012. After the 2013 election, he became Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for the Economy. He continued these roles after the 2018 election, also taking on the role of Minister of Health. From 2013 to 2018, Schneider was also the Minister for Defence. He stepped down from his government roles in February 2020.

Early Life and Education
Etienne Schneider was born in Dudelange, Luxembourg. He finished his high school studies at the Lycée Technique d'Esch-sur-Alzette. He then went on to study business and finance. He attended the ICHEC Brussels Management School and the University of Greenwich in London. He graduated from the University of Greenwich in 1995.
Political Career
Early Roles in Politics
In 1995, Etienne Schneider began his political career as a councilor in Kayl. He held this position until 2005. After that, he became the first alderman of Kayl, serving until 2010. From 1997, he was the secretary general of the Luxembourg Socialist Workers' Party (LSAP). He also worked as a research assistant for the European Parliament in Brussels from 1995 to 1996.
Ministerial Positions
In February 2012, Schneider became the Minister of the Economy and Foreign Trade. He was responsible for private sector research and new laws about research support.
After the 2013 general election, Etienne Schneider was appointed Deputy Prime Minister. He also became the Minister of the Economy, Minister of Internal Security, and Minister of Defence. These roles were part of a new government formed by three political parties.
Following the 2018 general election, he continued as Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of the Economy. He also took on the role of Minister of Health. As Minister of Economy, Schneider supported space programs. He mentioned the environmental benefits of mining resources from asteroids.
Business Career
After leaving his government positions on 4 February 2020, Etienne Schneider moved into the business world. In June 2020, he was appointed as a director at ArcelorMittal, a large steel company. In April 2020, he also started his own company, SA Beta Aquarii. He also became an independent director of Sistema, a Russian company. However, following the events of February 2022, Schneider ended his connections with Sistema and East-West United Bank (Luxembourg).
