Etienne Schneider was born on January 29, 1971. He is a politician and economist from Luxembourg. He served as the First Deputy Prime Minister of Luxembourg from 2013 to 2020. He is a member of the Luxembourg Socialist Workers' Party (LSAP).
Mr. Schneider started his political career in local government. He was a town councilor in Kayl from 1995 to 2005. Later, he became the first alderman (a senior council member) for Kayl, serving from 2005 to 2010.
He then moved into national politics. In 2012, he became the Minister for the Economy and Foreign Trade. After the 2013 Luxembourg general election, he was appointed Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for the Economy. He also served as Minister for Defence from 2013 to 2018. Following the 2018 Luxembourg general election, he continued his roles and also became the Minister of Health.
After leaving his government positions in 2020, Mr. Schneider began a career in the business world. He joined the boards of large companies like ArcelorMittal and Sistema.
Early Life and Education
Etienne Schneider was born in Dudelange, a town in Luxembourg. He finished his high school studies at the Lycée Technique d'Esch-sur-Alzette.
He then went on to study at two different universities. He attended the ICHEC Brussels Management School. He also studied at the University of Greenwich in London. In 1995, he earned his degree in business and finance.
Political Career and Roles
Etienne Schneider began his work in public service in 1995. He became a councilor in the town of Kayl. He held this position until 2005. From 2005 to 2010, he served as the first alderman of Kayl.
In 1997, he became the secretary general for the parliamentary group of the Luxembourg Socialist Workers' Party (LSAP). He also held important roles in energy companies. He was chairman of the board for Cegedel, an electricity company. Later, he became chairman and managing director of Enovos Luxembourg, a German energy company.
From 1995 to 1996, he worked as a research assistant at the European Parliament in Brussels. In 1997, he also worked on a project with NATO in Brussels. In 2010, he became chairman and managing director of Luxembourg's Société Nationale de Crédit et d'Investissement.
Mr. Schneider resigned from all his business roles in February 2012. This was when he became the Minister of the Economy and Foreign Trade. In this role, he helped lead the Superior Committee for Research and Innovation. His work included supporting private sector research.
After the national elections on October 20, 2013, Etienne Schneider received new appointments. On December 4, 2013, he became Deputy Prime Minister. He also served as Minister of the Economy, Minister of Internal Security, and Minister of Defence. These roles were part of a government made up of three parties.
Following the elections on October 14, 2018, he took on new responsibilities. On December 5, 2018, he was appointed Deputy Prime Minister again. He also became the Minister of the Economy and Minister of Health. This was also a coalition government.
As Minister of Economy, Mr. Schneider supported the idea of mining near-Earth asteroids. He believed this could help the environment by finding resources off Earth.
Business Ventures
On February 4, 2020, Etienne Schneider stepped down from his government positions. He then moved into the business world. In June 2020, he was appointed as a director at ArcelorMittal. This happened after Jeannot Krecké, another former minister, resigned from his position there.
On April 30, 2020, Mr. Schneider started his own company. It is called SA Beta Aquarii. The company is named after a bright star. In June 2020, he also became an independent director of Sistema.
