Early Life and Basketball Start
Eugene Omoruyi was born in Benin City, Nigeria. When he was just one year old, his family moved to Canada. Growing up, he first enjoyed playing soccer. He started playing basketball during his second year at Monsignor Percy Johnson Catholic High School.
Later, Eugene went to Orangeville Prep in Orangeville, Ontario. In his final season there, he was a top player. He scored about 16.9 points and grabbed 9.6 rebounds per game. He was even named a First Team All-Star in the Ontario Scholastic Basketball Association. He played alongside other future basketball stars like Jamal Murray and Thon Maker. Eugene decided to play college basketball for Rutgers.
College Basketball Journey
Playing for Rutgers
When Eugene started at Rutgers as a freshman, he averaged 2.4 points and 2.2 rebounds per game. In his second year, he improved a lot. On November 28, 2017, he scored a season-high 22 points against Florida State. As a sophomore, he averaged 7.9 points and five rebounds per game.
For his junior year, Eugene was chosen as a team co-captain. He worked hard on his shooting during the summer, taking 1,000 shots six mornings a week! This hard work paid off. On November 11, 2018, he had an amazing game with 24 points and 10 rebounds against Drexel. A few weeks later, on November 23, he scored 20 points and grabbed 17 rebounds in a win over Boston University. In his junior season, he averaged 13.8 points, 7.2 rebounds, and 2.4 assists per game. He received special mentions for his great play in the Big Ten Conference.
Transferring to Oregon
For his senior season, Eugene decided to transfer to Oregon. Due to college rules, he had to sit out one season before he could play for Oregon. Many people were surprised by his decision to leave Rutgers.
He finally made his debut for Oregon on December 2, 2020. In that game, he had his best performance yet, scoring 31 points and grabbing 11 rebounds against Missouri. As a senior, he was a key player, averaging 17.1 points, 5.4 rebounds, 2.3 assists, and 1.5 steals per game. He was recognized as a First Team All-Pac-12 player. After this successful season, Eugene decided to enter the 2021 NBA draft to become a professional player.
Professional Basketball Career
Starting with the Dallas Mavericks
Eugene was not chosen in the 2021 NBA draft. However, he still got a chance to play professionally. On August 13, 2021, he signed a special contract with the Dallas Mavericks. This contract meant he would split his time between the Mavericks and their G League team, the Texas Legends. Unfortunately, he got a season-ending injury while playing with the Legends on December 15. The Mavericks then waived him on December 26.
Time with the Oklahoma City Thunder
On July 2, 2022, Eugene signed another special contract, this time with the Oklahoma City Thunder. His contract was changed to a multi-year deal on February 10, 2023, showing the team's belief in him. However, he was waived by the Thunder on February 26, 2023.
Playing for the Detroit Pistons
Soon after, on March 3, 2023, Eugene signed a 10-day contract with the Detroit Pistons. He played well enough that he signed a second 10-day contract on March 13. Then, on March 23, he signed a contract to play with the Pistons for the rest of that season.
The Pistons had an option to keep Eugene for the 2023–24 NBA season, and they used it on June 29, 2023. But just two days later, they waived him.
With the Washington Wizards
On July 12, 2023, Eugene signed a two-way contract with the Washington Wizards. He also played for their G League team, the Capital City Go-Go. On March 1, 2024, his contract with the Wizards was changed to a standard NBA contract.
The Wizards waived Eugene on August 21, 2024. He then signed with the Minnesota Timberwolves on September 25, 2024, but was waived by them on October 18, 2024.
Joining Raptors 905
On November 21, 2024, Eugene joined Raptors 905, the G League team for the Toronto Raptors. He even signed a 10-day contract with the Toronto Raptors on January 8, 2025. However, he did not play in any games for the Raptors during that time. He continued to play for Raptors 905, rejoining them on January 19, 2025.
