Eugene Paul Bennett (4 June 1892 – 6 April 1970) was an English soldier. He is famous for receiving the Victoria Cross (VC). This is the highest award for bravery given to British and Commonwealth forces. He also received the Military Cross (MC).
Early Life and Education
Eugene Paul Bennett was born in Cainscross, Gloucestershire, England. He was one of five sons born to Mr. and Mrs. Charles Bennett. From 1905 to 1908, he attended Marling School. He earned a scholarship to go there from Uplands School in Stroud.
Heroism in World War I
During the First World War, Eugene Paul Bennett was a Temporary Lieutenant. He was 24 years old and part of the 2nd Battalion, The Worcestershire Regiment. On November 5, 1916, near Le Transloy, France, he showed incredible bravery. This act earned him the Victoria Cross.
His unit was attacking, and he was leading the second group of soldiers. The first group had many casualties, and their leader was killed. This made the second group hesitate. Lieutenant Bennett bravely moved forward, leading his men.
He inspired his soldiers with his courage and determination. He reached their goal with only sixty men. Even though his small group was alone, he quickly made sure their position was safe. Enemy fire came from both sides. He was wounded but kept leading his men. He directed and controlled them.
Lieutenant Bennett showed amazing cheerfulness and resolve. His personal courage was truly inspiring. Without his bravery, the attack might have failed right at the start.
Life After the War
After World War I, Eugene Paul Bennett became a lawyer. He started practicing law in 1923. He worked as a prosecuting lawyer from 1931 to 1935. Then, he became a Metropolitan Magistrate from 1935 until he retired in 1961. A magistrate is a judge who handles less serious cases.
During World War II, he served as an officer. He was part of the Air Training Corps in the Royal Air Force. After retiring, he moved to Vicenza, in northern Italy. He passed away there at the age of 77.
His Legacy
