Eugene Victor Wolfenstein (born July 9, 1940, died December 15, 2010) was an American thinker. He studied how societies work and was a psychoanalyst, which is like a therapist who helps people understand their minds. He also taught political science at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA).

His Early Life and Schooling

Eugene Wolfenstein went to Columbia College and earned his first degree in 1962. He did very well, graduating with high honors. He was also part of a special academic group called Phi Beta Kappa Society.

He continued his studies at Princeton University. There, he earned two more degrees in political science. He got his Master's degree in 1964 and his Ph.D. (a very high degree) in 1965. After this, he became a professor at UCLA.

Later, in 1984, he earned another Ph.D. in psychoanalysis. This was from the Southern California Psychoanalytic Institute. He taught there from 1988 to 2004. He also worked as a private psychoanalyst, helping people, until he passed away.

His Important Work

Wolfenstein was part of a way of thinking called critical theory. This means he looked closely at how society works. He especially focused on African American culture and social movements. These are groups of people working for change.

In one of his books, The Victims of Democracy, he wrote about Malcolm X and the fight for Black freedom. He studied how different social groups and their thoughts affected racism. He also looked at the struggle for Black liberation.

He further developed his ideas in other books. These included Psychoanalytic-Marxism (1993) and Inside/Outside Nietzsche (2000). In his later works, he also started to think about gender identity. His research often explored African-American stories and writings.

He wrote a book called A Gift of the Spirit (2007). This book looked deeply at a famous text by W. E. B. Du Bois called THE SOULS OF BLACK FOLK. Just before he died, another study of his was published. It was titled “Talking Books: Toni Morrison Among the Ancestors.”

What He Taught

As a professor at UCLA, Eugene Wolfenstein taught many different classes. For younger students, he taught an introduction to political theory. He also taught about ancient political ideas.

He had special classes on African-American freedom stories. He also taught about Malcolm X and Black liberation. Other topics included Marxist political theory and sometimes a seminar on Platonic ideas.

For graduate students, he focused on important works by famous thinkers. These included Du Bois, Foucault, Freud, Hegel, Marx, and Nietzsche. He also taught about other related critical writings.

His main interests were the history of political theory. He was also very interested in psychoanalytic theory and how it is used. Other interests included critical theory, critical race theory, and feminist theory.
