Eunus (died 132 BC) was a Roman slave from Apamea in Syria. He became a very important leader in a big slave uprising. This event is known as the First Servile War (135 BC–132 BC). It happened in the Roman area of Sicily.
Eunus became famous because people thought he was a prophet. He claimed to have special visions and messages from the goddess Atargatis. This goddess was important in his home country. He said she told him that the rebel slaves would capture the city of Enna. He also claimed he would become a king one day.
The Story of Eunus
Eunus was a slave to a Greek man named Antigenes in the city of Enna. People believed he could see the future. They thought he received messages from the gods. Antigenes would even show Eunus to his guests. Eunus would then tell them their fortunes.
A Prophet and Leader
Eunus was also known for a special trick. He could blow fire from his mouth during his trances. He said this proved his special powers. However, some people believed it was just a clever act. They thought he hid a small, burning nut in his mouth. He would then blow through it to make fire and sparks.
When the First Servile War began, Eunus quickly took charge. He told the slaves that their revolt had the gods' support. He was even in the front lines when they attacked Enna. People said he was blowing fire from his mouth during the battle.

Becoming King Antiochus
After capturing Enna, Eunus declared himself king. He chose the name Antiochus. This name was used by the Seleucids, who ruled his homeland of Syria. He called his many followers "Syrians." There were tens of thousands of them.
Eunus wanted to create a new state that was free from Rome. He even made his own coins. These coins had the words "King Antiochus" on them. He also set up a system to lead and supply his army. This helped his forces stay strong for a long time. His armies took over several other cities in Sicily.
The End of the Revolt
Eunus and his army were very successful for several years. They defeated Roman forces sent against them. However, a Roman army led by Marcus Perperna finally defeated Eunus's army.
Eunus and some of his close followers hid in a cave. But they were found and captured. Eunus was sent to prison. He became sick and died there before he could be punished.
