History of the Building
The building where Eureka! Science + Discovery is now used to be another attraction. It was called Spaceport. Spaceport opened its doors on July 26, 2005. It was a place where people learned all about space.
Spaceport: A Journey to the Stars
Spaceport focused on the Solar System and outer space. It had many interactive exhibits. These exhibits taught visitors about planets, stars, and rockets. You could explore the wonders of the universe.
The Spacedome Planetarium
One of the most popular parts of Spaceport was the Spacedome planetarium. This was a special room with a domed ceiling. It showed amazing films about space. You could feel like you were flying through the stars. A visit to Spaceport usually took about two hours. This included half an hour in the planetarium.
Mersey Ferry Connection
Visitors to Spaceport could also enjoy a River Explorer Cruise. This was a ride on a Mersey Ferry. It was a great way to see the local area. It added to the fun of a day out at Spaceport.
Why Spaceport Closed
In July 2019, Spaceport closed down. The number of visitors had started to drop. It also became too expensive to keep running. This was partly due to government funding cuts.
The New Eureka! Centre
After Spaceport closed, plans were made for a new attraction. It was announced that the building would become the "Eureka! Science + Discovery" Centre. This new project cost about £14 million. The building is still owned by Merseytravel. However, the new Eureka! company now runs the attraction. It brings new life and learning to the area.
