History of Euskirchen District
The Euskirchen district has changed its size over many years. Its history shows how different areas joined together to form the district we know today.
How the District Grew
- In 1827, a small district was first created around the city of Euskirchen. This was the very beginning of the district.
- Later, in 1932, another district called Rheinbach was divided. The Euskirchen district received the southern part of Rheinbach, making it larger.
- The district grew even more in 1972. The district of Schleiden became part of the Euskirchen rural district. This merger helped create the current size and shape of the Euskirchen district.
Understanding the Coat of Arms
The coat of arms for the Euskirchen district tells a story about its past. It shows symbols from important historical areas and rulers.
Symbols on the Coat of Arms
- The top-left part of the shield shows roses. These roses represent the counts of Arenburg, who were important rulers in the past.
- In the top-right section, you can see a lion. This lion is a symbol of Jülich, another significant historical territory.
- The bottom-right part features a wavy line. This line stands for the counts of Manderscheid-Blankenheim.
- Finally, the bottom-left section displays the Cologne cross. This cross represents the historical connection to the city of Cologne.
The district was officially given this coat of arms in 1973.
