Eva's Early Life and Dreams
From her very first day at school, Eva's father wanted her to study hard and become a doctor. At first, Eva didn't mind this idea. But as she grew older, she learned about many different jobs. She became very interested in becoming a lawyer or a judge.
Eva liked the idea of being a lawyer because she saw that there were no female judges or lawyers in her community. However, she knew her family might not agree. In her family and among many Palestinian refugee families, being a doctor was seen as the best job. Engineering was also okay, but the legal profession was not as accepted.
Following Her Passion
Even though studying law might cause problems with her family, Eva decided to follow her dream. The same year she finished high school, a local university started offering a law degree. Eva applied and was accepted.
On December 10, 1993, two years before she finished her law degree, Eva met a famous female lawyer. This lawyer was also a human rights activist. Meeting her inspired Eva greatly. From that day on, Eva decided she wanted to work to protect human rights.
Eva's Achievements
Eva Abu Halaweh has achieved many important things since deciding to work for human rights:
- She helped start the Mizan Law Group for Human Rights in Amman, Jordan. She is now the Executive Director of this group.
- Before working with Mizan, Eva had her own law practice. She also worked as a legal advisor for the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees.
- She has been a member of the Arab Organization for Human Rights since 1993.
- Eva won the Franco-German Award for Human Rights. This award recognizes people who do great work in human rights.
About Mizan Law Group
The Mizan Law Group for Human Rights was started in 1998. A group of lawyers, including Eva Abu Halaweh, founded it.
Before Mizan was created, many people who faced human rights problems came to these lawyers for help. The lawyers realized that the problem was bigger than just helping individual cases. Eva explained that the laws themselves often did not protect human rights well enough. So, they decided they needed to work to change these laws.
At first, the Mizan Group worked on protecting human rights in general. Over time, the lawyers became experts in helping specific groups of people. These groups include young people, orphans, and refugees.
