Eva Bowring (born Eva Kelly; January 9, 1892 – January 8, 1985) was a U.S. Senator who represented the state of Nebraska. She was born in Nevada, Missouri. In 1928, she married Arthur Bowring. They lived on their ranch, known as the Bowring Ranch, near Merriman in Cherry County, Nebraska.
Eva Bowring made history as the first woman to represent Nebraska in the United States Senate. She was a strong supporter of the Republican Party in Nebraska.
Who Was Eva Bowring?
Eva Bowring was born in Missouri in 1892. She grew up and later moved to Nebraska. In 1928, she married Arthur Bowring. Together, they managed a large cattle ranch. This ranch was located near a town called Merriman.
Eva was very involved in her community. She also cared a lot about politics. She worked with the Republican Party in Nebraska for many years.
Becoming a Senator
In 1954, a U.S. Senator from Nebraska, Dwight Griswold, passed away. The Governor of Nebraska at the time, Robert B. Crosby, chose Eva Bowring to take his place. This was a very important moment. It made her the first woman ever to serve as a Senator for Nebraska.
She served in the Senate from April 16, 1954, until November 7, 1954. During her time, she helped represent the people of Nebraska in the U.S. government. Senators work in Washington D.C. to create and vote on laws for the whole country.
Life After the Senate
After her time as a Senator, Eva Bowring went back to ranching. She continued to live and work on her ranch near Merriman. She also took on another important role.
