Early Life and Family
Eva Ekvall was born in Caracas, Venezuela. She grew up spending time in both the United States and Venezuela. Because of this, she spoke both English and Spanish very well from a young age. Eva went to Academia Washington in Caracas.
Her father, Eric Ekvall, was American with Swedish roots. He lived in Venezuela since the early 1980s and worked as an actor. Eva's mother, Dawn Johnson, was born in Jamaica. She used to run a small modeling agency in Alaska, which is where she met Eva's father. Eva had an older brother named Alec, who is a musician.
Becoming Miss Venezuela and Beyond
When Eva was 17 years old, she won the title of Miss Venezuela in 2000. The next year, she competed in the Miss Universe Pageant and placed as the third runner-up. Eva was a Buddhist, which made her the first non-Christian person to win the Miss Venezuela title.
After her time as a beauty queen, Eva had a brief acting role on a TV show called Las Rottenmayer on Televen. She then went on to study journalism at Universidad Santa María in Caracas. Soon after getting her degree, she became a co-anchor for the news program El Noticiero on Televen.
Eva was also interested in radio and sometimes filled in as a temporary host for a radio show on Circuito Onda. She also worked for the Sexto Poder newspaper. There, she did online interviews using BBM, which was a new way for Venezuelan newspapers to connect with people. As a model, Eva was often seen in popular magazines like Sambil and Ocean Drive.
Personal Life and Family
Eva Ekvall married a radio producer named John Fabio Bermúdez in September 2007. They had one daughter together, named Miranda, who was born in July 2009.
Facing Cancer
In February 2010, just a few months after her daughter was born, Eva was diagnosed with advanced breast cancer. She went through eight months of treatment. This included chemotherapy, radiotherapy, and a double mastectomy (surgery to remove breast tissue).
Eva wrote about her experience in a book of photographs called Fuera de Foco (which means Out of Focus). The book was released in December 2010. After her treatment, she became a strong supporter for SenosAyuda, which is a group that helps raise awareness about cancer.
Eva's Passing
When her cancer returned, Eva moved to the United States. She went to University General Hospital in Houston, Texas, for treatment. Even with intense medical care, her health got worse. Eva passed away on December 17, 2011. Her family shared that her remains would be cremated in Houston.
Many Venezuelans, including famous artists and politicians, shared their sadness after Eva's death. Her husband posted a photo on Twitter showing his hand holding hers in a hospital bed. He wrote, "Always together... I love you wife." On March 1, 2012, Eva's husband started the Eva Ekvall Foundation to honor her memory and continue her work.
