Eva Lois Allmon Evans (born January 14, 1935 – died July 20, 2020) was an important American educator. She lived in Lansing, Michigan, and led a large group called Alpha Kappa Alpha. This group is a sorority, which is like a club for women, often linked to colleges. Eva Lois Evans was their 24th international president. In 2005, she was honored by being added to the Michigan Women's Hall of Fame.

Growing Up and Learning

Eva Lois Allmon was born in Memphis, Tennessee. She grew up in Detroit, Michigan, and was the only child of Exzelma Lowe Allmon. Her father worked for the post office.

She went to Northern High School in Detroit. After high school, she continued her education. She earned her first degree from Wayne State University in 1961. Later, she earned both a master's degree and a Ph.D. (a very high degree) from Michigan State University.

Her Studies and Research

For her Ph.D., Eva Lois Evans wrote a special paper in 1977. It was about how teachers saw their students. She studied how teachers' ideas about "locus-of-control" (how much people feel they control their own lives) and "level of aspiration" (their goals) affected students. She looked at both white and Black elementary students.

Her Career as an Educator

Eva Lois Evans started her career teaching in Lansing, Michigan. She played a big role in helping to make Lansing's schools fair for everyone. This included working on desegregation, which meant bringing students of all races together in schools.

She became the first woman to be the Deputy Superintendent of the Lansing Public Schools. This was a very important leadership position. She retired from the school district in 1995. In 2018, she said about her time there, "I love the Lansing Schools... I don’t know that I did everything right, but I did the best I could, for as long as I could.”

Leading Alpha Kappa Alpha

In 1990, Eva Lois Evans was chosen as the first vice president of Alpha Kappa Alpha. This led to her becoming the 24th international president of the sorority. She served in this top role from 1994 to 1998.

In 2008, she shared her life story in an interview with The HistoryMakers. This was part of a special program celebrating Alpha Kappa Alpha's 100th birthday.

Other Important Roles

Eva Lois Evans also served the state of Michigan in other ways. In 1985, Governor James Blanchard asked her to join the Michigan Civil Rights Commission. This group works to protect people's civil rights. She also joined the state's Council for the Humanities.

Later in her life, she started and led a retirement community in Winston-Salem, North Carolina.

Her Family and Legacy

Eva Lois Allmon married Howard Evans in 1964. She passed away in 2020 at the age of 85 in Ohio.

Her work and dedication are still remembered. In 2018, the Dr. Eva L. Evans Welcome Center in Lansing was named in her honor. Also, Lansing Community College offers the Eva L. Evans Education Scholarship. This scholarship helps students who are studying to become teachers.
