Evaldo Gouveia de Oliveira (born August 8, 1928 – died May 29, 2020) was a famous Brazilian singer and songwriter. He was best known as simply Evaldo Gouveia. He created many popular songs in the style called MPB, which means "Brazilian Popular Music."
Evaldo Gouveia's Early Life
Evaldo Gouveia was born in a small city named Orós in the Brazilian state of Ceará. When he was just three months old, his family moved to a nearby city called Iguatu.
At age 11, Evaldo moved to Fortaleza, the capital city of his home state. This is where he began his music journey at a very young age. In the 1950s, he formed a music group called Trio Nagô. He played with his friends Mário Alves and Epaminondas de Souza. Together, they released several music albums and shorter recordings.
Becoming a Solo Artist
Later, Evaldo Gouveia decided to move to Rio de Janeiro to start a solo music career. He became very famous, partly because of his friendship with another singer, Altemar Dutra. Altemar helped Evaldo by singing his songs, which made them well-known to many people.
As a solo artist, Evaldo Gouveia released many albums. He often worked with other talented singers and songwriters like Adelino Moreira and Jair Amorim. Even though they worked together a lot, they never formed a permanent band.
Later Years and Passing
In late 2017, Evaldo Gouveia had a stroke. This health issue caused lasting effects on his body.
Evaldo Gouveia passed away on May 29, 2020, in Fortaleza. He was 91 years old. His death was caused by problems from COVID-19 during the worldwide COVID-19 pandemic in Brazil.
