Evan Seys facts for kids
Evan Seys (sometimes called Yevan or Ievan) was an important lawyer who lived from 1604 to 1685. He became a top government official, serving as the Attorney General for Oliver Cromwell. He also worked as a member of Parliament after King Charles II returned to power.
From about 1649 until he died, Evan Seys was involved in the politics of his home area, Glamorgan in Wales, and also in Gloucestershire, England. He was a strong Protestant and loved studying old things and history.
Early Life and Education
Evan Seys was the fourth son of Richard Seys and Mary Evans. His father, Richard, was also a lawyer from a famous legal school called Lincoln's Inn.
In 1638, Evan married Margaret Bridges. Sadly, Margaret passed away in 1651. They had a son named Richard, and two daughters, Margaret and Elizabeth.
Evan went to Cowbridge School until he was 17 years old. In 1621, he went on to study at Christ Church, Oxford, a well-known university.
Evan Seys's Career in Law and Politics
Evan Seys started his legal career as the Recorder of Gloucester in 1649. This meant he was a chief judge in the city. In 1652, he became a Bencher at Lincoln's Inn, which is a senior position at a legal society.
He held many legal jobs in Wales during the time of the Protectorate, when Oliver Cromwell ruled England. He was also part of a group that helped govern Glamorgan. His career reached a high point when he became the Attorney General for Oliver Cromwell. This important role meant he was the chief legal advisor to the government.
In 1659, Evan Seys served as a Member of Parliament (MP) for Glamorgan. This was during the short time when Oliver Cromwell's son, Richard Cromwell, was in charge.
Later in 1659, Evan Seys joined a large group of people who were working to bring King Charles II back to the throne. After the King returned, Evan Seys continued his political work. From 1661 to 1681, he was an MP for Gloucester. He lived in a large house near the cathedral in Gloucester.
