The Eveleth Recreation Building is a special historic place in Eveleth, Minnesota. It was built in 1918. First, it was a big gym for the city. It had a curling rink on the first floor. There was also an ice hockey rink on the second floor.
Back then, Eveleth had lots of money from mining. Many men moved there for work in the Mesabi Range mines. Later, in the 1930s, more women lived in the city. So, the building changed. It became a factory that made clothes. This gave jobs to women and helped the city's economy grow in new ways.
A Place for Fun and Games
The Eveleth Recreation Building was the first modern sports center in the Mesabi Range area. It quickly became famous for its amazing hockey players and teams. One well-known team was the Eveleth Reds. They were part of the United States Amateur Hockey Association.
When it was too warm for ice sports, the building was still busy. People came for roller skating and public dances. In 1922, the city built a new place just for hockey. About ten years later, the Recreation Building stopped being used for skating.
From Sports to Shirts
After World War II, the building changed again. A company called Cluett Peabody & Company turned it into a factory. They made famous Arrow brand shirts and underwear there.
The Arrow factory stopped making clothes in Eveleth in 1978. After that, a company that made furniture used the building. More recently, around 2019, the building started being used to store cars and boats.
A Historic Landmark
The Eveleth Recreation Building was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1980. This means it is an important historical site for the whole state. It was recognized for its role in industry and social history.
The building shows how cities supported fun activities during the Progressive Era. It also tells a story about how the Iron Range's economy and population changed over time.
