Dr. Evelyn Crosslin's Story

Early Life and Education

Evelyn Stocking was born in Daytona Beach. She went to college at Bethune-Cookman College. At that time, African-Americans were not allowed to attend medical schools in Florida. So, Evelyn traveled to Tennessee to earn her medical degree (MD) from Meharry Medical College.

A Doctor for the Community

After finishing her studies, Dr. Crosslin became the very first African-American woman to practice medicine in Volusia County. She married another doctor, Neill Crosslin. Dr. Evelyn Crosslin worked for 47 years at the Halifax Medical Center in Daytona Beach. She also had her own medical office. For 30 years, she helped babies and young children at the Daytona Beach Public Health Unit's Well Baby Clinic.

Helping Others

Dr. Crosslin and her husband were known for providing excellent medical care. They especially helped people who could not afford to pay for private doctors. To honor their amazing contributions, the Halifax Crosslin Health Center was opened in 1994. This center helps people by setting fees based on what families can afford.
