Evelyne Oughtred Buchanan (born 21 January 1883, died 21 November 1978) was a talented British artist. She was especially known for her beautiful landscape paintings. These are artworks that show natural outdoor scenes like mountains, rivers, or forests.

Becoming an Artist: Evelyne's Journey

Evelyne Oughtred Buchanan was born in a town called Stockton-on-Tees in the north-east of England. She went to school there when she was young. Even though she loved art, she mostly taught herself how to paint.

Learning and Growing as a Painter

Evelyne did attend the Glasgow School of Art for a short time. After that, she moved to Newlyn in Cornwall, a coastal area in England. In 1910, she spent four months at an art school there. This school was run by a famous artist named Stanhope Forbes.

While in Newlyn, Evelyne was greatly inspired by other artists. She especially admired the work of Laura Knight and Lamorna Birch. These artists helped shape her own painting style. Later, she studied how to paint portraits (pictures of people) with Robert Heriot Westwater in Scotland. Eventually, she decided to live in Edinburgh.

Taking a Break and Returning to Art

For some years, Evelyne stopped painting. But she started again in 1933 and continued creating art until the early 1970s. She stopped only when her eyesight began to fail, making it hard to see details. Evelyne passed away in an Edinburgh nursing home on 21 November 1978.

Recognized for Her Art

Evelyne Buchanan's talent was recognized by many art groups. In 1937, she became a member of the Scottish Society of Women Artists. Two years later, in 1939, she joined the Society of Scottish Artists.

Exhibitions and Collections

Her paintings were shown in important art exhibitions. These included the Royal Academy and the Royal Scottish Academy. She also exhibited her work with the Society of Women Artists.

In 1971, Evelyne had a special art show in Edinburgh. She exhibited her paintings alongside her daughter, Elspeth Buchanan, who was also an artist. Her son-in-law, Nicholas Horsfield, also joined the exhibition. Today, you can see some of Evelyne's paintings at the Glasgow Art Gallery.
