Leading the Knights Templar
Everard des Barres was a French knight. He joined the Knights Templar, a special group of warrior monks. Their job was to protect Christian pilgrims in the Holy Land. They also fought to defend important places.
Before becoming Grand Master, Everard was a top Templar leader in France. He was known for being very religious and brave.
Joining the Second Crusade
In 1147, Everard went on the Second Crusade with Louis VII of France. A crusade was a big religious war. Its goal was to take back control of the Holy Land.
During this time, the previous Grand Master, Robert de Craon, died. Everard was chosen to take his place. This was a big honor. His strong connection with King Louis VII helped him get the job. The Templars needed the king's help and money to keep fighting.
Saving the King
Everard showed his bravery during the crusade. He even saved King Louis VII during a tough battle. This fight was against the Seljuk Turks in a place called Pisidia. This event showed how important Everard was to the king.
After the Crusade
The Second Crusade faced many challenges. One big event was the Siege of Damascus in 1148. This attempt to capture the city did not succeed.
After this, King Louis VII decided to go back to France. Everard went with him. He was trusted with the king's money and important items. Even though Everard left, many Templar knights stayed behind. They helped protect the city of Jerusalem from attacks.
Becoming a Monk
In 1152, Everard made a big decision. He decided to step down as Grand Master. He then became a monk at a place called Clairvaux Abbey. This meant he chose a quiet life of prayer.
Bernard de Tremelay took over as the next Grand Master. Everard lived for many more years after becoming a monk. He passed away sometime after 1176.
