Evish facts for kids
Evish (which means "coarse mountain pasture" in Irish) is a small countryside area in County Tyrone, Northern Ireland. It's about 3 miles from Strabane and 7 miles from Plumbridge. Evish is also a "townland," which is a traditional small piece of land used for mapping in Ireland. It covers an area of about 870 acres.
Discovering Evish
Evish is a quiet community with a few important places. It has Evish Primary School, where local kids go to learn. There's also the Evish Cross Community Group, which helps bring people together.
A Presidential Connection
One of the most interesting facts about Evish is its link to a former American president! The area includes a place called Dergalt. This is where the family home of President Woodrow Wilson is located. He was the 28th President of the United States, serving from 1913 to 1921. His grandparents came from this very spot before moving to America.
Ancient History in Evish
Evish is also home to a very old historical site. There is a special type of ancient burial place called a Wedge tomb. This tomb is a protected historic monument. Wedge tombs are stone structures built a very long time ago, often used as graves. They are called "wedge" because they are wider and taller at one end and get narrower and lower at the other. This one is located at a spot known as H3923 9678.
