Ewen James Hanning Cameron, also known as Lord Cameron of Dillington, was born on November 24, 1949. He is a British farmer and landowner. He is also a "life peer," which means he has a special title that allows him to be a member of the House of Lords for his lifetime. In the House of Lords, he sits as a "crossbench" member. Early Life and Education
Family Background
Lord Cameron is one of five children. He is the second son, and the oldest surviving son, of Major Allan John Cameron. His grandfather was Sir Donald Walter Cameron of Lochiel. Sir Donald was the 25th Chief of Clan Cameron in the Scottish Highlands.
Lord Cameron's mother, Mary Elizabeth Vaughan-Lee, came from a family that owned land in Somerset, England.
School and University
Ewen Cameron went to Harrow School, which is a well-known school in England. After that, he studied modern history at Oxford University.
Career and Public Service
Managing the Dillington House Estate
Since 1971, Lord Cameron has managed the Dillington House Estate. This estate is near Ilminster in Somerset. His mother's family has owned this land for over 250 years. He chose part of his title, "Dillington," from this estate.
Leadership in Agriculture and Rural Affairs
From 1995 to 1997, Lord Cameron was the national president of the Country Land and Business Association. This group helps people who own land and businesses in the countryside.
He was also part of the UK Government's Round Table for Sustainable Development from 1997 to 2000. This group worked on ways to develop things without harming the environment for the future.
From 1999 to 2004, he was the chairman of the Countryside Agency. This agency worked to protect and improve the English countryside. He also served as the UK Government's rural advocate for England during this time. This role meant he spoke up for the needs of people living in rural areas.
Becoming a Peer
In 1986, he was appointed High Sheriff of Somerset. This is an old and important role in a county. In 2003, he was made a Knight, which is an honor given by the King or Queen.
On June 29, 2004, he was given a "life peerage." This means he became Baron Cameron of Dillington in the County of Somerset. A life peerage allows someone to be a member of the House of Lords for their entire life.
Other Important Roles
Lord Cameron is a Fellow of the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors. This means he is an expert in land and property. He is also a Fellow of the Royal Agricultural Societies.
From 2010 to 2015, he was the President of the Guild of Agricultural Journalists. This group supports journalists who write about farming. Since 2010, he has also been a co-chairman of the All-party Parliamentary Group on Agriculture and Food for Development. This group in Parliament works on issues related to farming and food in developing countries.
Family Life
Lord Cameron married Caroline Anne Ripley in 1975. They have three sons and one daughter. His younger sister, Bride Donalda Elspeth Cameron, is married to Lord Donald Graham. Lord Donald Graham is the half-brother of James Graham, 8th Duke of Montrose.
