Eyer Peak facts for kids
Eyer Peak (which is vrah Ayer in Bulgarian) is a tall mountain in Antarctica. It rises to 3,358 meters (about 11,017 feet) high. This peak is part of the Probuda Ridge, located in the north-central Sentinel Range. The Sentinel Range is found within the Ellsworth Mountains.
Eyer Peak is separated from the northern part of Probuda Ridge by Zvegor Saddle, which is 2,500 meters (about 8,200 feet) high. The peak overlooks Embree Glacier to its northwest and north. It also stands above Ellen Glacier to its southeast. The first time someone climbed Eyer Peak was on December 31, 2006. An Australian and Chilean team, led by Damien Gildea, made this first ascent.
This peak is named after Louis-Emil Eyer (1865-1916). He was a Swiss-Bulgarian teacher. Louis-Emil Eyer is famous for starting the modern sports movement in Bulgaria.
Where in Antarctica is Eyer Peak?
Eyer Peak is located at 78°09′18″S 85°59′45″W. It is about 4.48 kilometers (2.78 miles) northeast of Mount Anderson. The peak is also about 4.25 kilometers (2.64 miles) east-southeast of Mount Bentley. You can find it about 4.42 kilometers (2.75 miles) south-southwest of Mount Press. The United States first mapped this area in 1961. These maps were later updated in 1988.
