Because of his Irish roots, he became a member of the Royal Irish Academy.

Eyles Irwin's Life Story

Eyles Irwin was born in Calcutta (now Kolkata) in 1751. His parents were Irish. His father worked for the East India Company and passed away while serving them. Eyles went to a private school in Chiswick, England.

In 1767, he joined the East India Company himself. He worked as a civil servant in Madras (now Chennai). In 1775, he was suspended from his job. This happened because he was connected to George Pigot, a governor who was imprisoned. Eyles went back to England to explain his situation to the company's leaders. Luckily, they agreed to give him his job back.

In 1778, Eyles Irwin married Miss Brooke. She was related to Henry Brooke, a famous Irish writer. By 1780, Eyles was back in Madras, working for the Company. He returned to England in 1785.

In 1792, he was given an important role. He became a superintendent for the East India Company's business in China. He held this job for two years. After that, he tried to become a member of the company's board of directors, but he was not successful. Eyles Irwin spent the rest of his life enjoying social events and continuing his writing. He passed away on August 12, 1817.
