Ezequiel Hurtado's parents were Nicolas Hurtado and Maria Trinidad Hurtado. He went to school at Colegio San Jose. Later, he studied law at the University of Cauca. He finished his law studies on January 27, 1852. After graduating, he also taught law at the university.
Starting His Military and Political Career
Ezequiel Hurtado first joined the military in 1851. He helped defend the country's laws and institutions. Two years later, his military and political career really began. He joined the Colombian Liberal Party. They were fighting against a leader named Jose Maria Melo, who was acting like a dictator.
Rising Through the Ranks
From 1860, Hurtado took part in movements against the Conservative Government. This government was led by Mariano Ospina Rodriguez. He joined the army of General Thomas Cipriano de Mosquera. Their army was successful in 1861. Because of his efforts, Ezequiel Hurtado was promoted to the rank of General.
Important Political Roles
After becoming a General, Ezequiel Hurtado held many important positions. He was part of the Cauca Assembly. He also served as a government minister several times. He helped create the 1863 Constitution at the Convention of Rionegro. This document was very important for Colombia's laws.
Governor and Minister
In 1868, he was elected as a representative in Parliament. Later, he became a Senator. In 1878, President Julian Trujillo Largacha chose him to be the Minister of War and Navy. This meant he was in charge of the country's military forces. A year later, he was elected Governor of the Sovereign State of Cauca. He served as Governor from 1879 to 1883.
Becoming President
After leaving his role as Governor in 1883, Congress elected him. He became the Designated President of the Republic. This meant he was chosen to take over if the current president couldn't serve. The Supreme Court of Justice also appointed him as a Presiding Judge.
Serving as President
Ezequiel Hurtado served as president from April to August 1884. He took office because Rafael Nuñez, the elected president, was delayed in starting his term. During his time as president, Hurtado appointed many important people. He chose ministers for areas like Housing, Finance, Public Works, and Education.
Later Life and Legacy
When he left the presidency, Hurtado disagreed with Rafael Nuñez's new plans for the country. These plans were called the "Regeneration project." In the war of 1885, Hurtado was captured. He was treated harshly and then sent away from Colombia. He went to Costa Rica in Central America.
Return to Colombia
In 1889, just before he passed away, Ezequiel Hurtado was allowed to return to Colombia. His remains are now in the Panteon de los Proceres Cemetery in Popayán. This special burial ground was opened in 1940. It honors important heroes of Colombia.
