The Ezra Stiles House is a historic home in Newport, Rhode Island. It is located at 14 Clarke Street. This large house was built way back in 1756. It has a unique roof style called a gambrel roof. The house is named after Ezra Stiles, a very important person who lived there for many years.
The Ezra Stiles House: A Look Inside Its History
The Ezra Stiles House is a big, two-and-a-half-story building. It is made of wood. It has five sections across its front. You can see two large brick chimneys inside the house.
When it was first built in 1756, the house faced south. But in 1834, something interesting happened. The entire house was turned on its lot! It was rotated to face west instead. At that time, its front entrance was updated. It was given a new look called Greek Revival style.
Who Was Ezra Stiles?
The house was home to Reverend Ezra Stiles from the time it was built. He was a minister for 20 years. He worked at the Second Congregational Church on Clarke Street. This church was very close to his home.
Ezra Stiles later became the president of Yale University. He was a very smart and influential person. When he left Newport in 1777 to go to Yale, he made sure that a person who had been working for him, and who was not free, gained their freedom.
A Protected Piece of History
Today, the Ezra Stiles House is a private home. It is still a beautiful and important part of Newport's history. Because of its historical value, the house was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1972. This means it is recognized as a special place worth protecting.
