The FDR Skatepark in 2014

The FDR Skatepark is a famous skatepark in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA. It's a super popular spot for skateboarders of all levels. You can easily get there using the Broad Street subway line, getting off at the Pattison Avenue stop.

This amazing park was built by volunteers on land that wasn't being used, right under a big highway overpass (Interstate 95) in Franklin Delano Roosevelt Park. People donated materials, and skaters worked together to create it. Over the years, the park has grown bigger with new sections added around the original parts. Many well-known local skaters, like Willy Akers, Chuck Treece, and Bam Margera, have spent time here.

What Makes FDR Skatepark Special?

Skaters designed and built this park for other skaters. That's why many in the skateboarding world think it's one of the best parks around! It's known for having "endless speed lines," which means you can skate really fast and smoothly.

Park Areas and Features

The FDR Skatepark has a few different areas:

  • The main part is right under the highway overpass. This means it stays dry even when it rains or snows!
  • There's also a connected pool section.
  • You can find a mini ramp and a vert ramp too.

Professional skaters and magazines like Thrasher and Skateboarder have called FDR Skatepark a concrete "skateboard paradise." Some of its cool features include:

  • The "Bunker": This is a long concrete section, about 60-foot-long (18 m).
  • The "Dome": This is a 4-foot (1.2 m) concrete wall that goes up into a big, tough overhang about 11-foot (3.4 m) high. It has brick coping, which is the edge skaters grind on.
  • The "Amoeba": This is a 6-foot area with humps that look like an amoeba.

These features make the park fun and challenging for everyone, from beginners to pros.

FDR Skatepark's Fame

FDR Skatepark has become very famous in the skateboarding world.

  • In 2005, it hosted the Gravity Games, a big competition for extreme sports.
  • You can even skate the entire park in the video game Tony Hawk's Proving Ground, made by Activision and Neversoft.
  • Since the mid-1990s, the park has appeared in countless skate videos. These include popular ones like Transworld IE and Toy Machine's Jump Off A Building.
