Fomento Económico Mexicano, S.A.B. de C.V., known as FEMSA, is a big company from Mexico. It works in many countries, especially in Latin America and the United States. FEMSA is famous for selling drinks and running stores.
This company owns the biggest independent Coca-Cola bottling group in the world. It also runs the largest chain of convenience stores in Mexico, called Oxxo. FEMSA is also a major owner of Heineken N.V., a well-known beer company. In 2019, FEMSA earned a lot of money, making it one of the biggest companies in Mexico.
FEMSA's shares are traded on the Mexican Stock Exchange and the NYSE. This means people can buy and sell parts of the company.

History of FEMSA
FEMSA has a long history, starting way back in 1890.
- 1890: A brewery called Cuauhtémoc was started.
- 1985: Cuauhtémoc brewery joined with Moctezuma to become Cervecería Cuauhtémoc Moctezuma.
- 1988: FEMSA was officially created from another company called Grupo Visa.
- 1993: Coca-Cola bought a part of FEMSA. This led to the creation of the Coca-Cola FEMSA division, which bottles Coca-Cola drinks.
- 2006: FEMSA Cerveza bought Kaiser Cervejarias. Also, Coca-Cola FEMSA tried to buy a Mexican juice company called Jugos del Valle, which happened in 2007.
- 2007: Bill Gates, a very famous businessman, invested a lot of money in FEMSA.
- 2010: A Dutch beer company, Heineken International, bought FEMSA's beer business (Cervecería Cuauhtémoc Moctezuma). In return, FEMSA became a big owner of Heineken.
- 2011: Coca-Cola FEMSA bought another Coca-Cola bottling company in Mexico, Grupo Cimsa.
- 2012: Coca-Cola FEMSA bought Lácteos Santa Clara, a large dairy company in Mexico.
- 2015: FEMSA started getting into the drugstore business in South America by buying a part of Socofar in Chile.
- 2017: FEMSA's Imbera division started using new, more efficient ways to make its drink coolers. Also, FEMSA Logistica changed its name to Solistica.
- 2019-2020: FEMSA continued to grow by buying parts of other companies. These included Corporacion GPF in Ecuador, a part of Jetro Restaurant Depot, and AGV in Brazil. They also bought a part of Raizen Conveniencias. In 2020, FEMSA bought a big part of WAXIE Sanitary Supply and North American Corporation in the United States.

FEMSA has several important parts, or divisions, that handle different types of businesses.
FEMSA Comercio
FEMSA Comercio runs many different types of stores.
Proximity Division
This part of FEMSA Comercio runs OXXO, which is the most popular convenience store chain in Mexico. OXXO stores are everywhere! They also have other small stores in Latin America.
- OXXO: These stores started in 1978. OXXO often works with Heineken Mexico to sell drinks.
- Gorditas Doña Tota: In 2013, FEMSA bought most of Gorditas Doña Tota, a Mexican restaurant chain that sells traditional Mexican food called gorditas. This business started in 1952 when Carlota Murillo began selling gorditas from a cart. Today, there are over 200 of these restaurants in Mexico.
Health Division
FEMSA Comercio also owns many drugstores.
- Drugstores: FEMSA started buying drugstores in 2012, like Farmacias Yza and Farmacias FM Moderna. In 2015, they bought a big part of SOCOFAR, which runs the Cruz Verde drugstores in Chile and Colombia. They also bought Ecuadorian drugstores like Fybeca and SanaSana.
Fuel Division
- OXXO Gas: This is like OXXO stores, but for gas stations. OXXO Gas operates about 550 gas stations in Mexico.
Coca-Cola FEMSA
FEMSA owns almost half of Coca-Cola FEMSA. This company is the biggest bottler of Coca-Cola drinks in the world!
- What they do: Coca-Cola FEMSA bottles and sells Coca-Cola and other soft drinks in many countries. These include Mexico, parts of Central America, South America (like Argentina, Brazil, Colombia, Venezuela), and the Philippines (until 2018).
- Big numbers: In 2019, Coca-Cola FEMSA produced and sold over 11% of all Coca-Cola drinks worldwide.
- Ownership: FEMSA owns 47.9% of Coca-Cola FEMSA. The Coca-Cola Company owns 28.1%, and the rest is owned by people who buy shares on the stock market.
- Other products: Besides soft drinks, Coca-Cola FEMSA also distributes beer and bottled water in some areas.
FEMSA Negocios Estratégicos
This division helps FEMSA's other businesses and outside companies with important services.
Solistica
Solistica is a company that helps other businesses move their products around. They handle logistics for many industries, like medicines, cars, and consumer goods. Solistica helps Coca-Cola FEMSA and Heineken deliver their products.
Imbera
Imbera makes equipment for drinks and food. This includes coolers for soft drinks and beer, and machines for processing, storing, and weighing food. Imbera has factories in Mexico, Colombia, and Brazil.
Plásticos Técnicos Mexicanos (PTM)
PTM works with plastics. They create plastic solutions for FEMSA's businesses and other companies. This includes making plastic parts for handling materials, cars, and food/beverages. They use different ways to make plastic items, like blowing, injecting, and heating plastic.
