Fabian John Blattman, who has received the OAM award, was born on 28 December 1958. He is an amazing Australian Paralympic athlete. After a motorbike accident, he became disabled. He first tried disabled bowls, but then found his passion in athletics. As a Paralympic competitor, he has achieved many world records and won two gold medals at the Paralympics!

Fabian Blattman's Early Life

Fabian Blattman was born in Narrandera, New South Wales, Australia. He went to Springwood High School. In 1978, a motorcycle accident changed his life, leaving him a quadriplegic. This means he has limited movement in all four limbs.

After his accident, Fabian spent time recovering and learning new ways to live. He then moved back home with his parents. Even though he uses a wheelchair, Fabian loves to travel the world on his own! He also used to play table tennis just for fun.

Fabian's Sporting Journey

Fabian Blattman is known for his incredible achievements in sports. He started his journey with bowls before finding his true calling in wheelchair athletics.

Starting with Bowls

In 1985, Fabian competed in a bowls event at the Royal North Shore Paraplegic Games. This was one of his first steps into competitive sports.

Becoming a Wheelchair Athletics Star

Fabian began wheelchair athletics to get fitter. He quickly became very good!

Here are some of his amazing achievements:

  • 1988 Seoul Paralympics: He competed in the 200 m event.
  • 1990 World Championships: In Assen, Netherlands, he won a gold medal in the 4x100 m relay. He also earned two bronze medals in the 100 m and 200 m races.
  • 1992 Barcelona Paralympics: Fabian won a silver medal in the 4×100 m relay and a bronze medal in the 4×400 m relay.
  • 1996 Atlanta Paralympics: This was a huge year! He won a gold medal in the 1500 m event, which earned him a special award called the Medal of the Order of Australia. He also won a silver medal in the 800 m race.
  • 1998 World Championships: Fabian won the Men's Marathon in the T51 category.
  • 2000 Sydney Paralympics: Competing at home, he won a gold medal in the 400 m T51 event. He also got a silver medal in the 1500 m T51 event and a bronze medal in the 800 m T51 event. That year, he received the Australian Sports Medal.

Fabian also competed in other races, like the Arrive Alive Summer Down Under Wheelchair Track and Road Racing Series. He even won the Oz Day 10K Wheelchair Road Race T51 event nine times!

Setting World Records

Fabian Blattman has held several world records in athletics. This shows how incredibly fast and skilled he is!

  • 1990: He set records in the 4x100 m and 4x400 m events at the Stoke Mandeville Games.
  • 1991: He set a world record in the 1500 m race.
  • 1995: He set a record time of 2:40.15 in the men's T51 800 m event in Canada.
  • 1998: He set records of 05:01.49 in the 1500 m and 16:51.81 in the 5000 m at a meeting in Sydney.
  • 1999: He improved his 5000 m record with a time of 16:46.95, also in Sydney.

Fabian was part of the Australian Institute of Sport from 1994 to 2000. His coach was Andrew Dawes, who also coached other Paralympic champions like Louise Sauvage and Greg Smith.
