Fairland is what we call a ghost town in Koochiching County, Minnesota. A ghost town is a place where people used to live and work, but now almost no one lives there anymore. Fairland is located in a part of Minnesota called Northwest Koochiching Unorganized Territory, which is south of a town called Birchdale. You could find it along Black River Road, close to Fiero Truck Trail.

Fairland's Story

How Fairland Began

Fairland started as a small community around the year 1902. When it first began, it was known by a different name: Feldman. This name was given to honor an early settler who lived there.

Changing Names

The community was called Feldman until 1912. Then, its name was changed to Fairland. This new name came from a place in Norway called Fjaarland. Fairland kept this name until 1936.

The Post Office

For many years, Fairland had its own post office. It opened in 1911, which made it easier for people living there to send and receive mail. The post office served the community for 25 years, closing its doors in 1936. After the post office closed, fewer people lived in Fairland, and it eventually became the ghost town it is today.
