How Fairlane Village Mall Started
The idea for Fairlane Village Mall began a long time ago. Building the mall wasn't easy! There were delays because of earth moving and even the discovery of coal. The mall was built on land owned by the Seitzinger Brothers. They named it after the Ford Fairlane car.
The mall first opened its doors in 1974. When it opened, it had three main stores: Boscov's, McCrory, and Woolco. Later, Woolco changed its name to Gee Bee. In 1992, another company called Value City bought out Gee Bee.
Changes Over the Years
Fairlane Village Mall has seen many changes since it opened. In 1986, a large tent outside Boscov's collapsed during bad weather. Luckily, only minor injuries happened. The Boscov's store itself was rebuilt in 1995.
Over the years, different companies have managed and owned the mall. In 2006, Levin Management started running the mall. In 2009, the Waldenbooks bookstore announced it would close. It finally shut its doors in January 2010. The mall also used to have a movie theater with two screens. It has been empty since 2010.
Lexington Realty International took over managing the mall on May 1, 2019. In 2020, the mall lost a restaurant and three stores. Two of these closed during the mall's temporary shutdown due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
