It's known as a census-designated place (CDP), which means it's an area identified by the U.S. Census Bureau for statistical purposes. In 2020, about 2,771 people lived there. Fairview is also part of the larger Asheville metropolitan area.

History of Fairview
Fairview has a rich history, with several important buildings listed on the National Register of Historic Places. These include the William Nelson Camp Jr. House, the John A. Lanning House, the Dr. Cireo McAfee McCracken House, and Sherrill's Inn. These places are recognized for their historical importance.
One of the first recorded land purchases in the area happened on November 27, 1793. A person named Martin Gash bought 76 acres of land near a stream called Cripple Creek (which is now known as Gash's Creek). The land had marshy areas that attracted buffalo, and these areas had to be drained before the land could be used.
Geography and Location
Fairview is located in the southeastern part of Buncombe County. It sits along U.S. Route 74A, also known as Charlotte Highway.
The community is about 11 miles (18 km) southeast of downtown Asheville. It's also about 16 miles (26 km) northwest of Lake Lure, a popular spot. According to the United States Census Bureau, Fairview covers a total area of about 6.22 square miles (16.1 square kilometers), and all of it is land.
