A Look Back at Fallis's History
How Fallis Began
Fallis was started in 1892. It was built near an Indian village on the edge of the Iowa Reservation. The area was wooded and sat on a "long red hill."
The town was first called Mission. But in 1894, it was renamed Fallis. This was to honor William Henry Fallis, who helped develop the town and became its first postmaster.
Fallis in Its Heyday
Even though Fallis is almost a ghost town today, it was once a busy place. In the early 1900s, many railroad lines passed through Fallis. It was a lively community with many businesses, including:
- Stores
- Hotels
- Banks
- Lumber yards
- A city hall
At its busiest, the town might have had around 400 people living there. Fallis was also home to several talented writers and poets.
Changes Over Time
After the Great Depression and the Dust Bowl in the 1930s, the town started to shrink. The importance of railroads also declined. By 1950, the population had dropped to just 105 residents.
In 1960, a big fire destroyed much of the town. Very little of the old town was ever rebuilt, and only a few buildings remain today.
Fallis Today
Even with its small size, Fallis still has a volunteer fire station. A community center was built in 1999, showing that the people who live there still care about their town.
