A Look Back at Fallon's History
The community of Fallon was named after two early settlers, Luke and James Fallon. They were important people in the area's beginnings.
The Railroad Era
Starting in the 1870s, Fallon became a busy stop on the North Pacific Coast Railroad. This train line connected Cazadero to Sausalito. From Sausalito, people could take a ferry across the bay to San Francisco.
The Fallon family ran a dairy farm and a creamery in the area. They used the railroad to send their dairy products, like milk and butter, to San Francisco and other places. This was a big part of Fallon's early economy.
Growth and Challenges
In 1898, Fallon got its very own post office. This was a sign that the community was growing.
When the huge 1906 San Francisco Earthquake hit, Fallon was lucky. The town didn't suffer much damage. However, a few years later, in 1912, a big fire broke out. It destroyed the creamery, the train station, and many other businesses. After this fire, the creamery moved to the nearby Tomales area. This event caused Fallon to start shrinking.
Train service to Fallon eventually stopped in 1930.
