Folarin Falana, known as Falz, is a talented Nigerian rapper, songwriter, and actor. He was born on October 27, 1990. Falz started his music journey in secondary school with a group called The School Boys. He began his professional music career in 2009. Falz became widely known after releasing his song "Marry Me," which featured singers Poe and Yemi Alade.
He runs his own music company called Bahd Guys Records. Falz has released several albums. His first album, Wazup Guy, came out in 2014. He followed this with Stories That Touch in 2015, 27 in 2017, and Moral Instruction in 2019.

Early Life and School
Falz was born in Mushin, Lagos State. His parents, Funmi and Femi Falana, are both lawyers and human rights activists. Falz finished his primary school at St. Leo's Catholic Primary School in Ikeja. He attended Olashore International School in Osun State for secondary school. He then studied Law at the University of Reading in England. After that, he went to the Nigerian Law School in Abuja and became a lawyer in 2012.
Falz's Career Journey
Starting Out in Music (2009–2013)
Falz began making music for fun when he was in secondary school. He and a friend created a music group called "The School Boys." In 2009, he put together some of his early songs into a mixtape called Shakara: The Mixtape.
In 2011, Falz released a song called "Wahz Up Guy." He then released "High Class" and "Currency." These songs helped him become more recognized in the Nigerian music scene.
First Albums and Big Hits (2014–2016)
On January 2, 2014, Falz was named one of the "Artistes To Watch in 2014" by tooXclusive. His first official album, Wazup Guy, was released on May 30, 2014. This album had 18 songs and featured other artists like Olamide and Yemi Alade. Songs like "Marry Me" and "Cool Parry" were very popular.
On January 31, 2015, Falz released a new song called "Ello Bae." This was his first solo song after Wazup Guy. It helped him win several awards.
In 2015, Falz was nominated for "Best Collaboration of The Year" at the 2015 Nigeria Entertainment Awards for "Marry Me." He was also nominated for "Best Rap Act of The Year" and "Best New Act to Watch." His song "Ello Bae" also earned him a nomination at The Headies award.
On November 3, 2015, Falz announced his second album, Stories That Touch. It was released on November 17.
In 2016, Falz won "Best Actor in a Comedy Movie/Series" at the 2016 Africa Magic Viewers Choice Awards. This was for his role as Segun in the TV show Jenifa's Diary. In June 2016, Falz also won the "Viewer's Choice Best New International Act" at the 2016 BET Awards.
On October 27, 2016, Falz worked with singer Simi to release Chemistry. This was a seven-song EP (Extended Play). They had worked together before on songs like "Jamb Question" and "Soldier."
New Albums and Acting (2017–Present)
On October 27, 2017, which was his 27th birthday, Falz surprised everyone by releasing a new album called 27. This album had 17 songs, including popular hits like "Bhad Baddo Baddest" and "Wehdone sir." It featured many famous artists such as Davido, Olamide, and Burna Boy. The album was very successful and won many awards and nominations.
In May 2018, Falz released a music video called "This Is Nigeria." This video was inspired by Childish Gambino's "This is America." Falz's video talked about important issues in Nigeria, like corruption.
Later, the National Broadcasting Commission (NBC) banned the song, saying it was vulgar. Falz disagreed, saying the song was not vulgar. He even sued the NBC for 100 Million Naira.
On September 1, 2018, Falz won "Best Supporting Actor" at the 2018 Africa Magic Viewers' Choice Awards. This was for his role as Quam in the movie New Money. He became the first Nigerian musician to win this award twice.
In August 2020, Falz started his own film production company called House21TV. He also announced a new comedy series called Therapy Session, which would be shown on YouTube.
In March 2022, Falz announced a fresh start by deleting all his old posts on Instagram. He released a new song called "Ice Cream" with BNXN (also known as Buju). He even drove a van with a ticketing booth that said "Falz Ice Cream," giving out free ice cream in Lagos.
In March 2023, Falz worked with rapper Vector on a song called Yakubu. This song was about the 2023 Nigerian general elections and criticized some of the issues. It was named after the chairman of the election commission, Mahmood Yakubu. The song became very popular because of its strong message.
In May 2023, Falz had surgery in London to fix a torn ACL, which is a knee injury he got during a football match in late 2022. He shared his surgery and recovery journey on social media. He showed the challenges of getting better and his progress through physiotherapy.
Falz's Music Style
Falz calls his music style "Wahzup music." It's a mix of funny lyrics with modern hip-hop. He often uses a playful Yoruba accent in his songs.
In November 2014, Falz was ranked among the top rappers in Nigeria by notJustOk. They praised his ability to tell a story in his songs, using different accents and funny lines.
Speaking Up for Justice
EndSARS Protests
In October 2020, Falz encouraged other Nigerian celebrities to join the #EndSARS protests in Lagos. These protests called on the government to stop police brutality. Falz is known for speaking out about social justice issues in Nigeria. To honor the victims of police brutality, he released a music video for his song "Johnny."
He wrote about the song, "We will never forget the heroes that have been unlawfully slain. This is for them. For every single Nigerian life snatched away unlawfully, we must make sure we get justice." He also noted that the song's message became even more important over time.
In an interview with CNN in 2020, Falz said that President Buhari's promise to change the Nigerian police was frustrating. He said Buhari had been making the same promise since 2017.
Activism Through Music
Falz continues to use his music to talk about social and political issues in Nigeria. During the 2023 elections, he encouraged young people to get involved in politics. He also spoke about issues like people not voting and unfair elections. His 2023 song Yakubu, like his earlier hit This is Nigeria, shows his commitment to using music to criticize corruption and unfairness in the country.
