The Crataegus flabellata is a type of hawthorn tree. It is commonly known as the fanleaf hawthorn. This plant is originally from the northeastern United States and nearby parts of Canada.
It looks a bit like two other hawthorn species: C. macrosperma and C. chrysocarpa. Sometimes, people confuse C. macrosperma with the fanleaf hawthorn.
Different Types of Fanleaf Hawthorn
Within the fanleaf hawthorn species, there are different types called varieties. These varieties can have slightly different features.
One interesting variety is Crataegus crudelis. This type of fanleaf hawthorn grows in Quebec, Canada. It is special because its thorns can be very long, sometimes up to 10 centimeters!
There are also two other varieties: C. flabellata var. grayana and C. flabellata var. flabellata. The main way to tell them apart is by their flowers.
- C. flabellata var. grayana has 20 stamens in each flower. Stamens are the parts of a flower that produce pollen.
- C. flabellata var. flabellata has 10 stamens per flower.
Even though they have different numbers of stamens, many other features of these two varieties can look very similar.
