Fannegusha Creek (Blissdale Swamp tributary) facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Fannegusha Creek is a stream located in the central part of Mississippi. It flows through two counties: Carroll County and Holmes County. This creek eventually flows into the Blissdale Swamp.

About Fannegusha Creek

Fannegusha Creek starts in Carroll County. The place where a river or stream begins is called its headwaters. Here, the land is about 380 feet (116 meters) above sea level. The creek then flows towards the southwest.

Where Does it Flow?

As Fannegusha Creek travels, it enters Holmes County. It goes under two important roads: Mississippi Highway 17 and Mississippi Highway 12. These roads are located north and northeast of the town of Lexington.

The creek then enters the Blissdale Swamp. This swamp is part of the Hillside National Wildlife Sanctuary. When it reaches the swamp, the creek becomes channelized. This means its path has been straightened or deepened by people. The creek ends about 3.5 miles (5.6 kilometers) southeast of Tchula. It is also about one mile (1.6 kilometers) northwest of the community of Howard. At its end, the creek is about 125 feet (38 meters) above sea level.

What's in a Name?

The name "Fannegusha" comes from the Choctaw language. It is believed to mean "tasty squirrel." Over time, people have also called the creek by slightly different names. Some of these include "Foney Bush Creek," "Funnegusha Creek," and "Funnigusha Creek."
