History of Fannett
Fannett was named after B. J. Fannett. He was a local landowner who opened a general store in the 1890s. When Japanese immigrants started rice farming in the area, Fannett grew to help meet their needs.
Even though oil has been found near Fannett, the community's population has stayed small.
The Story of Boondocks Road
In 1993 and again in 2004, there was a discussion about the name of a road in Fannett. This road was originally called Jap Road. It had been named in the early 1900s after an immigrant rice farmer named Yoshio Mayumi.
However, over time, people realized that the name was not meant to honor Mr. Mayumi. Instead, it was a hurtful term, also known as an ethnic slur. Because of this, it was decided to change the name of the road. It is now called Boondocks Road.
Clifton Steamboat Museum
Fannett is home to the Clifton Steamboat Museum. This museum has a large exhibit about Lieutenant Commander Harry Brinkley Bass. A United States Navy destroyer ship, the USS Brinkley Bass, was named after him.
