Citra was a special grapefruit-flavored soft drink made by The Coca-Cola Company. It was first sold in the United States in 1996. Citra was released around the same time as another Coca-Cola drink called Surge. While Surge had caffeine, Citra did not.
Citra tasted a lot like Fresca, especially the Fresca sold in Latin America. That version of Fresca uses real sugar (sucrose) instead of aspartame, which is used in American Fresca. Citra also tasted similar to Squirt, but Squirt has a tiny bit of orange or tangerine flavor.
From Citra to Fanta Citrus
In the U.S., Citra changed its name to Fanta Citrus on March 15, 2004. It's important not to confuse Citra with Coca-Cola Citra, which is a different kind of Coca-Cola with a citrus flavor.
Marketing and Flavors
The first advertisements for Citra used the slogan "Curiously crisp Citra." Even though the drink tasted mostly like grapefruit and sugar, it was always called "citrus flavored."
Citra was made in two main flavors: Citrus Blend and Lemon. Fanta Citrus is now no longer sold, but it was only available in certain parts of the U.S.
Many people say that a flavor of Fanta called Fanta Grapefruit tastes very similar to the original Citra drink.
