Clarkia amoena is a beautiful flowering plant often called farewell to spring or godetia. It's a type of plant that lives for only one year, growing from a seed, flowering, producing new seeds, and then dying. You can find it growing naturally in the coastal hills and mountains of western North America. Its home stretches from British Columbia in Canada all the way south to the San Francisco Bay Area in California.

About Farewell to Spring
This plant is known for its lovely pink to pale purple flowers. It's a popular choice for gardens because it's so pretty and relatively easy to grow.
What Does It Look Like?
The farewell to spring plant can grow quite tall, sometimes reaching up to 1 meter (about 3 feet). It has thin, long leaves that are usually 2 to 7 centimeters long and 2 to 6 millimeters wide.
Its flowers are the main attraction! They are usually pink or light purple and have four wide petals. Each petal can be anywhere from 1.5 to 6 centimeters long. After the flowers bloom, the plant produces a dry capsule as its fruit. When this capsule is ready, it splits open to release many tiny seeds, which can then grow into new plants.
Different Types of Farewell to Spring
Scientists have identified three main types, or subspecies, of Clarkia amoena. However, it's common to find plants that are a mix of these types. The recognized subspecies are:
- Clarkia amoena subsp. amoena
- Clarkia amoena subsp. huntiana
- Clarkia amoena subsp. whitneyi (also known as Whitney's farewell to spring)
