Faridpur is a district located in the central part of Bangladesh. It is part of the Dhaka Division. This area covers about 2,072 square kilometers. Faridpur is bordered by the Rajbari and Manikganj districts to the north. To the south, it borders the Gopalganj district. On the east, you'll find the Dhaka, Munshiganj, and Madaripur districts.

A Look at Faridpur's History

The district of Faridpur gets its name from a respected Sufi saint. His name was Shah Sheikh Fariduddin. He taught and shared his beliefs in this area during the 12th and 13th centuries.

In the early 1800s, an important movement began in Faridpur. Hazi Shariatullah started the Farayzi movement. This movement was against the British rulers who controlled the region at that time. Another important movement also started here. It was against the British practice of forcing farmers to grow indigo. This movement was led by Dudu Miah.

Before 1860, the district was known by a different name, Fatehabad. The town of Faridpur itself began to develop in the late 1700s. In the 1930s and 1940s, Faridpur was a key place for the movement against colonial rule. It inspired other districts to join the fight for independence.
