The Farmers Bank Building was a tall skyscraper in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. It was completed in 1902 and stood 105 m (344 ft) (about 344 feet) high with 27 stories. This building was a well-known landmark in Pittsburgh for many years before it was taken down on May 25, 1997.

Many sports fans in Pittsburgh remember the building because of a huge mural painted on its side in 1992. This mural was 15 stories tall and showed famous Pittsburgh sports heroes like Roberto Clemente, Bill Mazeroski, Jack Lambert, Mean Joe Greene, and Mario Lemieux. The artist, Judy Penzer, completed this amazing artwork. For five years, the mural was a popular sight, often shown on TV when sports games were in town.

Building History

The Farmers Bank Building was finished in 1902. It served as a place for many businesses and offices. It was one of the early skyscrapers in Pittsburgh, showing how cities were growing taller.

Rockwell International Headquarters

In the mid-1960s, a big company called Rockwell International bought the building. They used it as their main office for a few years. In 1972, Rockwell International sold the building. They moved their main offices to the U.S. Steel Tower, which was just a few blocks away.

Demolition

The Farmers Bank Building was taken down on May 25, 1997. It was imploded, which means it was brought down using controlled explosives. A company called Controlled Demolition, Inc. handled this big job.

After the building was removed, a new department store called Lazarus was built on the same spot. Later, that store was changed a lot and is now a building with apartments called Piatt Place.
