Saint Nicholas's Helper
Long ago, people believed in house spirits that could be both helpful and a bit mischievous. Over time, these ideas blended with Christian traditions. Knecht Ruprecht became known as a companion to Saint Nicholas. He helps Saint Nicholas by keeping track of children's behavior.

People describe Knecht Ruprecht in different ways. Often, he wears a dark robe with a pointed hood. He might carry a long staff or a bag. Sometimes, he has small bells on his clothes. Some stories say he rides a white horse.
Traditions and Gifts
According to old traditions, Knecht Ruprecht would ask children if they knew how to pray. If they did, they might receive tasty treats like apples, nuts, and gingerbread. If children had been naughty, Knecht Ruprecht might leave them a lump of coal or a stick. These were gentle reminders to encourage better behavior next year. Saint Nicholas, on the other hand, always brought sweets for good children.
In some snowy mountain villages, especially in Austria, Knecht Ruprecht works closely with Saint Nicholas. They are sometimes joined by other figures called Krampus. These characters also help remind children to be good.
